2009 Case Study - Shiply.com
Environmental Innovation
Shiply.com was a joint winner of the Environmental Innovation Award 2009 for its website that helps hauliers to minimise empty loads by taking on work for routes they are driving.
The aim of the site is to avoid journeys by empty lorries on Britain's roads, reducing CO2 emissions, noise and air pollution as well as helping to reduce congestion. Potential reduction of 36 million tones of wasteful CO2 generated by empty lorries travelling on UK roads.
The activity:
With 25% of lorries on Britain’s roads travelling empty, shiply.com allows hauliers to search for work submitted by individuals and businesses along the routes they are already driving. In 2008, shiply.com formed a partnership with eBay to deliver large ‘local collect’ items.
The savings:
A potential reduction of the 36 million tonnes of wasteful CO2 generated by empty lorries; and over 500,000 miles of wasted trips saved since June 2008.
The benefits:
Fewer lorries on our roads means a reduction in CO2 emissions and congestion.
